Since the first surgery center was established in 1970 their growth (over 5000 nationwide) have amounted to a billion dollar Industry. We came across a very detailed and informative article in USA Today that outlines the latest trends and increases in performing medical procedures in these surgery centers. Please note, that you as a patient with medical insurance still have the final say as to where you would like your “outpatient” surgery performed. If you are not comfortable in a surgery center, then say something and don’t be swayed by the doctor’s “recommendation” – chances are highly likely they have a vested interest in the center.
A team of journalists based in California, Indiana, New Jersey, Florida, Washington D.C. and Virginia worked to tell this story in a partnership between USA TODAY Network and Kaiser Health News, a nonprofit news service covering health and health policy. Reporters pored through thousands of pages of court records and crisscrossed the U.S. to talk to injured patients or families of the deceased. For more than a year, using federal and state open records laws, reporters gathered more than 12,000 inspection records and 1,500 complaint reports, as well autopsies, EMS documents and medical records that became the foundation for this report.
